Mexican Avocado Exports to the U.S. Reach New Heights in 2023

In 2023, the Association of Mexican Avocado Producers and Packers and Exporters (APEAM) has achieved record-breaking avocado export sales to the United States, surpassing previous years’ numbers. The increased demand for avocados in international markets, particularly in the United States, is expected to continue this year. Avocado imports are predicted to rise significantly, with export volumes to the U.S. projected to exceed 1.19 billion tons.

The growth in avocado exports in 2023 is driven by a steady rise in consumption. Avocado consumption has gained popularity, especially during celebrations and events, such as the Super Bowl and Cinco de Mayo, where its demand soars.

APEAM plays a vital role as the exclusive Mexican cooperating partner with the United States and the USDA-APHIS for avocado exports. The association is also responsible for promoting avocados under the “Avocados From Mexico” brand in various countries. APEAM currently comprises nearly 35,000 growers and 84 packing houses.

In light of the ongoing growth in avocado demand, addressing the environmental impact of oversupply is crucial. APEAM is actively promoting sustainable projects to mitigate the environmental effects of avocado production. Through its Forest Conservation program, over 560,000 trees were donated for planting in Michoacán during the 2022-2023 season, bringing the total to 3.4 million trees since the program’s inception, including eight different pine species.

In addition to its environmental efforts, APEAM has taken significant steps toward sustainable agriculture by becoming the first avocado farming association to join the Mexican Network of the United Nations Global Compact. This commitment focuses on promoting and implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and marks a substantial milestone in the pursuit of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

Conclusion:

The Association of Mexican Avocado Producers and Packers and Exporters (APEAM) has witnessed a remarkable surge in avocado exports to the United States in 2023, setting new records. This surge is attributed to the growing demand for avocados in international markets, with the United States leading the way. Avocado consumption continues to rise steadily, especially during popular events like the Super Bowl and Cinco de Mayo.
