Dr. “Grace” Jinliu Wang Appointed President of Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Dr. “Grace” Jinliu Wang will become the 17th president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), effective Apr. 3, 2023.
“WPI’s founding principles of theory and practice resonate strongly with me,” Wang said. “WPI is a world-class institution with a unique and vital approach to teaching, learning, and discovery. Preparing STEM-focused professionals to see the world through technological, human, societal, and cultural lenses is distinctive, especially when so brilliantly coupled with WPI’s research and innovation ecosystem.”
Wang is a materials scientist – she holds seven U.S. patents – with experience as a leader in multiple fields.
In higher ed, she has previously been a professor in the Department of Materials Design and Innovation at the University at Buffalo; senior vice chancellor for research and economic development and interim provost of the State University of New York (SUNY) system; interim president of SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly); and executive vice president for research, innovation, and knowledge at The Ohio State University (OSU).
Outside of academia, she has been a researcher at IBM/Hitachi Global Storage Technologies; program director, division director, deputy assistant director for engineering, and acting assistant director for engineering at the National Science Foundation (NSF); and is currently a council member of the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Wang holds a B.S. and an M.S. in polymer materials from Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University.
