Excellent Psychology Questions That Lead to Amazing Conversations

One of the most exciting and interesting fields of study, psychology strives to understand human thought and behavior. The human mind is one of the most powerful tools of the known universe — and yet we know so little about how it works. That is why so many college students pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology: They want to learn as much as they can and contribute to such an important element of human life.

So many of the questions that guide psychologists in their research also serve to help people understand one another. If you are eager to get to know someone on a deeper level, you might use one of the following psychology questions that dig into the heart of a person’s worldview.

Who Are Your Role Models?

A role model is a clear example of the type of person someone aspires to become. By learning about someone’s role models, you are gaining insight into the qualities that person most admires and the characteristics they hope to develop. A person’s psychology is constantly shifting, and knowing their role models, you might get a better sense for what it is shifting toward.

What Did You Want to Be as a Child?

Most people change during adolescence and adulthood, but childhood dreams and desires can lay the foundation for a person’s personality and provide insights into an individual’s experiences during their formative years. For example, if someone once wished to be an artist but now works in accounting, they likely have a hidden creative side.

What Gives Meaning to Your Life?

While there is likely no objectively true meaning in life, there are certainly ways that individuals imbue their lives with meaning. Almost every person has their own unique reasons for continuing to engage with life, and how they find meaning in the chaos and void of existence will show you how they intend to live moving forward.

What Is Your Greatest Accomplishment?

Success is rarely objective; everyone has their own metrics for determining whether they are succeeding or failing. By asking about an individual’s greatest accomplishment, you are truly asking for more information about what they most value in life. That might mean buying property in the best suburbs to invest in, or it might mean graduating with a high-level degree in a field they feel passionate about.

What Has Been Your Most Difficult Experience?

Some people do not experience much hardship in their lives, but many undergo exceedingly traumatic events. Though this question might be difficult for some to answer, it will inevitably reveal deep and meaningful information about a person’s past, present, and future. If you do ask this question, you must listen attentively and provide any help you have available, like connections to disability insurance providers.

What Do You Want to Change About Yourself?

Often, an individual is their own greatest critic. This question works because it does not ask directly for a person to reveal their weaknesses or flaws, but instead it wonders how an individual would choose to improve themselves. You can learn much about what is important to a person based on how they answer — if they focus on physical attributes, personality traits, financial status, cognitive function or something else.

How Do Others Describe You?

People are rarely exactly as they see themselves, but amongst people with low self-awareness, that gap between perception and reality can be vast. In addition to someone about themselves and asking this question about how others might describe them, you might then interrogate friends and family to uncover the truth about an individual’s self-awareness.

Do You Want to Know When and How You Will Die?

Many people react negatively when confronted with questions about human mortality, but many people relish the opportunity to think and talk about death. In truth, thinking critically about one’s inevitable passing is wise and allows one to be proactive about the time left to them on Earth. Those who answer affirmatively to this question might already know the best places to die and have a good sense of the cost of life insurance.

Do You Believe that the Ends Justify the Means?

This is a moral question with no objectively correct answer, but how someone frames their response to this question can tell you much about their worldview. For example, if a person focuses on stealing food to feed a starving family, they are likely to be invested solving in social issues like poverty. Then again, there are plenty of morally dubious ends and means that might argue the opposite answer.

Surface-level conversations do almost nothing to bring people closer together. By using the above questions from psychology research, you can strengthen your relationships and dig deeper into what makes a person unique.
