How to Get Kids Interested in Coding

Today’s children are digital natives who can master new technologies seemingly overnight. That doesn’t mean all kids naturally gravitate toward activities such as coding, though. If you are one of many parents who wonder how to get kids interested in coding, you have several options. For example, the game Minecraft can help kids develop coding skills because it is a game based on creatively building things and features customization options such as Minecraft skins. Here’s a look at how to get children into coding.

Toys and Games

Toys and games have high success rates. They engage children of any age from 3-year-olds to 17-year-olds (although you would not use the same toys and games for kids of such different ages). Toddlers and young children can develop coding skills through STEM toys and apps they get to touch, feel, and interact with. Plenty of free resources and apps are available.

As mentioned earlier, Minecraft is a good game to build coding skills, and it is accessible to children as young as 8. It does have mild violence and levels of complexity that can make it inappropriate for children younger than that. Children learn basic coding skills and how to build worlds. They get to experiment with creativity and appearances by choosing and changing their skin in Minecraft.

Minecraft skins govern what a character looks like in the game. Many Minecraft skin websites offer a staggering variety of looks.

Fun

Whatever you do, keep your intro to coding efforts fun. Do not force anything. Think of coding like setting out Legos for your child. You would not lecture your kids on how to use Legos or painstakingly explain to your kids how to play with Legos.

The same idea applies to coding. If your children do not instantly take to coding (or Legos), that is OK. You can try a different type of introduction next time and/or wait until they are a little older. Make sure your kids are as fed and well-rested as possible for the experience.

Likewise, don’t try to micromanage the coding experience. For example, if your child chooses skins for Minecraft that you are not crazy about, let it be. Allow your children to pick their looks.

It is true that coding opens up a huge world of opportunities and career possibilities for kids, but most have to pick it up at their own pace. Trying to force it is likely to backfire. Keep the overarching goal of “fun” in mind.

Socialization

Kids generally enjoy doing things with their parents, so make coding a social activity with you. Even if you do not know much about coding, you can probably master enough to get by with a young child. As your children get older, coding camps, group coding projects, and creative projects are good avenues for socialization.

Passions

Is your child passionate about tigers? Rocks? Helping people? Chances are, your child has at least one passion, and the many strains of coding can help your children explore that passion. For example, kids can use coding to make an interactive project, create a game, or build a website.

Problem-Solving

Children love troubleshooting and solving problems. Jigsaw puzzles, scavenger hunts, and various games and challenges get kids into problem-solving mode. The activities do not constitute coding per se but firm up the association between fun and problem-solving. It helps many kids get into coding at some point.
