Alicia Witt has revealed she secretly battled cancer and underwent a mastectomy in the past year, all while mourning the sudden and simultaneous death of her parents.
The 46-year-old actress bravely opened up about her ordeal in a new Instagram post, where she shared throwback images and a video of herself looking triumphant as she finished her last round of treatment. Watch the clip above.
“Just a little over 2 months ago, i had my last round of chemical therapy prior to my mastectomy. my beloved, brilliant, collaborative, communicative doctor,@habibdoss at @tnoncology, was there to celebrate with us as i rang the bell!” she shared on the platform.
As mentioned, the clips were taken earlier this year but Witt – known for her roles in The Walking Dead and Friday Night Lights – only chose to share them today when she was “absolute certain” the disease was “completely healed” from her left breast.
“I had a tiny crew of human angels surrounding me for all 6 treatments, not only keeping my spirits high, but tending to and changing my @penguincoldcapsglobal,” she wrote, referring to the scalp-cooling caps she wore throughout her treatments.
“While keeping hair was obviously the last of my concerns on a larger level, i did deeply wish to keep my diagnosis private until it was 100% healed, god willing.”
“I’m so grateful to all those along the way during treatment who honored me by protecting my privacy during these months 🙏🏻 and grateful to help share that these caps can truly play a huge role in allowing a patient to reveal her journey on her own time, when she is ready.”
In her post, Witt reflected on the death of her mother Dianne, 75, and father Robert, 87, who were both found dead inside their property in Worcester, Massachusetts, in December. Their cause of death was later revealed to be “probable cardiac dysrhythmia” due to the cold, according to the death certificates obtained by The Telegram & Gazette.
“For me, this was such a needed part of my healing,” she said of her caps, “particularly given the horribly public tragedy that had happened in our family just as i was beginning my treatments.”
Following her parents’ tragic death, Witt shared a heartfelt Instagram post to thank “those who have reached out with your memories about my parents. they were brilliant educators, deeply kind, curious, intuitive, wise, young at heart, funny – there will never be enough adjectives to describe them.”
