Bella Hadid is no stranger to opening up about her mental health. In fact, the supermodel regularly takes to Instagram to discuss the toll that living in the public eye takes on her overall health. In our relentlessly online world of filters and clever captions, Bella’s attitude is refreshing – to say the least.
In an interview InStyle, Bella got real about her decision to cut down on drinking alcohol. As the co-founder and partner of Kin Europhics – which describes itself as a “new category of functional, non-alcoholic beverages to balance body, mind and spirit” – Bella is well-placed to advise on the growing sober-curious movement.
Explaining why she swapped alcohol for Kin Euphorics, Bella said, “I have done my fair share of drinking. I loved alcohol and it got to the point where even I started to, you know, cancel nights out that I felt like I wouldn’t be able to control myself.”
She added that it became “a lot harder to pick up the glass” after her doctor (one of Kin’s medical advisors) showed her brain scans of the effects of alcohol on her brain.
Bella continued, “I drink [Lightwave, a Kin Euphorics drink] when I have crippling anxiety and I can’t leave my house or when I’m not gonna drink alcohol but still want to loosen up and be able to speak to people and socialise.”
She’s also found that the drinks have helped to ease her insomnia, explaining, “It doesn’t put you slap on your butt, asleep for 15 hours, but it does really calm your brain, your nervous system, and those late-night thoughts. I drink it before bed and I sleep like a baby.”
Reflecting on her decision to drastically cut back on alcohol, Bella explained, “I don’t feel the need [to drink] because I know how it will affect me at 3 in the morning when I wake up with horrible anxiety thinking about that one thing I said five years ago when I graduated high school.
“There’s just this never-ending effect of, essentially, you know, pain and stress over those few drinks that didn’t really do much.”
Yep, that does sound pretty familiar. But what is Kin Euphorics, AKA the drink that Bella Hadid is obsessed with?
Well, Lightweight (Bella’s favourite tipple) is described as containing “Sparkling notes of lavender-vanilla, smoked sea salts, and passionflower,” which “meet mind-calming ingredients to mellow you out, help you to transcend stress, and open a portal to peace (think naked forest bathing at midnight).”
There haven’t been any clinical studies to support Kin Euphorics’ claims of stress reduction, however, they do contain GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a naturally-occurring amino acid that is often used in supplements to treat stress; and L-Theanine, another amino acid found primarily in green and black tea, which is a popular herbal remedy for anxiety.
Bella said, “I was already taking both of those things [GABA and L-Theanine] in the mornings before I would start my day for my anxiety to calm my nervous system.”
Bella has previously spoken up about her decision to take selfies while crying, explaining to the Wall Street Journal, “I would have really depressive episodes and my mum or my doctor would ask how I was and instead of having to respond in text, I would just send them a photo.
