Charlie Brown voice actor Peter Robbins dies, aged 65

Peter Robbins, the original voice actor of Charlie Brown, has died, aged 65.

His family confirmed the news on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT), announcing he had passed the previous week.

Robbins’ family told Fox 5 San Diego the performer, who had bipolar disorder and struggled with addiction issues, died by suicide mid-January.

Born Louis Nanasi, he began voicing the famous character in the 1960s Peanuts show when he was just nine years old.

He also voiced the character in A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965 and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown the following year in 1966.

In the 70s Robbins received four Grammy nominations for Best Recording for Children for his portrayal of the character.

The child star went on to get a tattoo of Charlie Brown — who he considered his childhood hero — and one of Snoopy, on his arm.

As a child, before taking on the character of Charlie Brown, Robbins made a guest appearance as Elmer in the popular TV series The Munsters.

Later, in 1966, he appeared in an episode of F Troop as well as an episode of Get Smart. He later made an appearance in the Sonny & Cher film Good Times, in 1967.

Robbins retired from the entertainment industry in 1972 before pursuing a career in real estate and returning to work in radio in the ’90s.

The voiceover artist had a chequered past with a five-year stint behind bars for making criminal threats to a San Diego County sheriff.

He previously pleaded guilty to threatening and stalking his ex-girlfriend and the plastic surgeon who performed her breast enhancement surgery, which he paid for.
