HBO has given us an exciting first look at the return of The Last of Us, though we’ll have to be patient for the full season. The newly released teaser for Season 2 reveals a deeper and more intense storyline. Following the conclusion of Season 1 in March 2023, HBO quickly renewed the series for a second season.

Fans should brace themselves for a darker narrative, with new characters, emotional moments, and, of course, more infected. The teaser, part of Max’s latest “coming soon” preview, features Joel (Pedro Pascal) reflecting on the previous season’s events.
In the teaser, Joel makes the pivotal decision to rescue Ellie from the Fireflies. We also see a raid on the Jackson, Wyoming community, intense confrontations with both humans and infected, and glimpses of new characters like Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and Dana (Isabela Merced), along with Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Wright.
Additionally, we get a first look at Catherine O’Hara’s mysterious new character, who poses a troubling question to Joel: “Did you hurt her?”
Season 1 ended with Joel killing Marlene (Merle Dandridge) and the Fireflies to protect Ellie from a potentially deadly brain surgery that could have ended the fungal apocalypse. Joel had been misleading Ellie about the events at the hospital as they traveled to Jackson, Wyoming.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will reprise their roles, joined by Rutina Wesley as Maria and Gabriel Luna as Tommy. Kaitlyn Dever and Isabela Merced will also be joining the cast, with Dever playing Abby, a vengeful soldier, and Merced portraying Dina, Ellie’s love interest.
Craig Mazin and series co-creator Neil Druckmann are returning as showrunners for Season 2. While the exact release date is still to be announced, the new season is expected to premiere in 2025.
