Mighty Ducks star Shaun Weiss addresses drug addiction and sobriety

Mighty Ducks alum Shaun Weiss has bravely addressed his drug abuse and road to sobriety in a candid new interview with Today Extra.

Speaking to hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys this morning, the 43-year-old said he is so grateful to be given a second chance despite his very public battle with drug addiction.

“I’m feeling better than I have in years and being able to get back and do movies again is like just a dream come true,” he said on the breakfast program.

“I’ll be honest, when all that stuff was going on, I never really thought I’d be at a spot where I could look back at all that in my rearview mirror. So to be able to be here now, I feel like I got a second chance.”

Weiss marked two years of sobriety in January after hitting rock bottom in 2020, and it took a couple of drug-related arrests, rehab and therapy to get to where he is today. After all he went through, Weiss said his demons had nothing to do with fame and being a child star – rather, it came from within.

“On the contrary, it had less to do with Hollywood and a lot to do with other things,” he said when asked how he was led down the dark path. “I was depressed, and my depression lead to my drug addiction, and I figured that out over a thousand hours of therapy. They say recovery is dealing with the things that lead to addiction, so I feel like I’ve done a lot of work at that now and I can say I’ve recovered.”

And he has his former Mighty Ducks co-stars, such as Emilio Estevez, cheering him on.

“That support meant everything to me because I got to a spot where I really didn’t care about myself as much, but I really didn’t want to let all these people down that were pulling for me,” he said.

“The cast, the Ducks – those guys are my family, my real-life family. I know those guys longer than I have anybody else … and they really were there for me and I didn’t want to let them down.”
