Biden’s sister says Meghan Markle would make good presidential candidate

President Biden’s sister, Valerie Biden Owens, wants Meghan Markle to pursue her rumored political ambitions all the way to the White House, suggesting that the former “Suits” star would make a good presidential candidate.

In an interview with “Good Morning Britain” Tuesday, Biden Owens, 76, extended an invitation to Markle to join the Democratic Party.

“It’s wonderful to have women in politics,” the 46th US president’s younger sister opined, according to Newsweek. “The more women we have, the better our democratic system will work, with a better point of view, a different point of view and we embrace all women.

“We welcome [Meghan] to come in and join the Democratic Party,” she added.

When asked if the Duchess of Sussex would “make a good presidential candidate one day,” Biden Owens replied: “Yes, perhaps. Of course she will.”

Markle, 40, and her husband, Prince Harry, 37, have been living in the US full-time with their children, Archie and Lilibet, since the couple stepped back from their roles as senior members of the British royal family in 2020.

Unconfirmed reports that Markle has been forging connections with top Democrats with an eye on a possible career in politics have long circulated, although there is no solid evidence that she is interested in running for an elected office.

In March 2021, investigative journalist Tom Bower, who is writing a forthcoming unauthorized biography of Markle, said he believes it is “likely” the former actress will try her hand at politics.

“The prospect of Meghan running for president is possible and I’d even say likely,” Bower told Closer magazine, as DailyMail.com reported at the time. “I really believe it’s where she sees herself going.”

In the run-up to the 2020 election between President Donald Trump and Vice President Joe Biden, Markle and her husband were accused by conservatives of interfering in the election by encouraging Americans to register to vote.

Speaking in a video for Time 100, the famous couple also warned Americans about the spread of misinformation and condemned hate speech.

In response to these remarks, Trump said he was “not a fan” of Markle, and quipped that he wished “a lot of luck to Harry because he’s going to need it.”

Last fall, Markle was again dinged for sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that advocated for paid parental leave.

“I’m not an elected official, and I’m not a politician,” Markle opened her letter, addressed from The Office of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “I am, like many, an engaged citizen and a parent.”

Biden Owens, a veteran political strategist and campaign manager for her brother, appeared on the British morning talk show Tuesday to promote her new memoir, “Growing Up Biden.”

During the same interview, Biden Owens also said she “absolutely” expects her 79-year-old brother to run for re-election in 2024, despite mounting questions about his alleged cognitive decline amid a growing list of public gaffes.
