10 Actors Who Had Multiple Roles In The DCAU

The highly anticipated third season of the Harley Quinn animated series is soon to be released this month, which is garnering a lot of attention. Although a new series, the show has already become hugely popular, partially thanks to the lovable cast of characters. In some instances, completely different characters, such as Clayface and the Joker, are in fact voiced by the same actor.

This is not the first instance where one actor has voiced multiple roles across the DCAU. What makes these alternate roles so interesting is that the voice actors are usually so famous for another role that they usually don’t get enough credit for the other. It showcases their acting range because the alternate roles sometimes sound nothing like the character they are famous for.

Most will likely remember Thomas F. Wilson as the recurring villainous bully Biff and his various analogs in the Back To The Future trilogy. Some may also recognize him as the voice of several meme-worthy background characters in SpongeBob SquarePants.

In the DCAU, he played Tony Zucco in Batman: The Animated Series. Zucco was the man behind the murders of Dick Grayson’s parents, which helped pave the way for him to become Robin. He also had an uncredited role as Dick Grayson’s father and after that, he was the voice of a henchman in Superman: The Animated Series and a radio DJ in The New Batman Adventures.

Tara Strong

One of the most talented voice actors in the business, Tara Strong has done a vast number of voices over the years. Currently, her most famous DC roles are Harley Quinn and Raven from Teen Titans but her start with DC actually came in The New Batman Adventures as Barbara Gordon, also known as Batgirl.

She’s also had several small roles in Superman: The Animated Series, The Zeta Project, and the Justice League shows. Tara Strong has since gone on to be in a multitude of DC projects, which include Terra on Young Justice, and even Poison Ivy.

With his low cool voice, Clancy Brown has been one of the most beloved portrayals of Lex Luthor since Superman: The Animated Series started. He guest-starred in one episode of The Zeta Project as Wendell Morgan and then played another villain in Batman Beyond as Big Time.

Kevin Conroy

For many fans, Kevin Conroy is the definitive Batman voice actor ever since he began with Batman: The Animated Series. However, he has contributed to other characters including Thomas Wayne, the cyborg Batman, and Joe Chill in various Batman: The Animated Series episode. In Justice League, he was the voice of Atom Smasher, Crimson Avenger, and Commander Steel.

Kevin Conroy has since gone on to play Batman in various other projects over the course of thirty years. However, he has done other voices including The Phantom Stranger is one of the best episodes of Batman: The Brave And The Bold, passing the torch onto Diedrich Bader.

Michael Ironside

Michael Ironside, who most might know from movies such as Total Recall, has had only two roles in the DCAU. Starting in Superman: The Animated Series and continuing to Justice League: Unlimited, Michael Ironside has been the voice of Darkseid. His version of Darkseid quickly became an iconic villain in this universe.

In The New Batman Adventures, one episode titled Legends Of The Dark Knight tells Batman stories in different styles. One of them is a dark and gritty story that directly adapts sequences from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. Ironside plays Batman in this story and his voice is perfect for Miller’s style.

Jeffrey Combs

Though the original Scarecrow was effective, most fans can agree that he was a character that The New Batman Adventures improved upon. Part of that was due to the new voice actor, which was Jeffrey Combs. Combs is a character actor famous for his horror roles such as Herbert West in Re-Animator.

He delivered a much scarier and horror-centric version of the Scarecrow. Later on, Combs would join the cast of Justice League as The Question, giving life to one of DC’s most complex characters. He was the no-nonsense detective but he also had plenty of memorable one-liners and zingers that stole the show.

Mark Hamill

Nobody expected that Luke Skywalker would make an effective version of The Joker but after he debuted in Batman: The Animated Series, he made history as one of the best Joker actors yet. Mark Hamill has voiced the Joker for so long that some consider him more famous for the Joker than as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.

However, the Joker was not his first dip into the world of DC. He first played The Trickster in the live-action series The Flash in the 90s. He returned to The Trickster in Justice League Unlimited, paying tribute to the series. In Batman: The Animated Series, he also played Ferris Boyle, the man behind Mr. Freeze’s tragic origins.

Ron Perlman

Before he was known for roles such as Hellboy and Sons Of Anarchy, Ron Perlman was the voice of the villainous Clayface on Batman: The Animated Series. He made for one of the best villain performances in the show and his take on the character would forever shape Clayface’s portrayal in the comics.

He would go on to voice Orion in Superman: The Animated Series and the Justice League show, Heavyman on Static Shock, and Jax-Ur in Superman: The Animated Series. He also voiced villains Bane, Killer Croc, and Rumor in the 2004 animated series The Batman.

Phil Lamarr

For years, Phil Lamarr had provided the voice of so many characters including Samurai Jack, Hermes on Futurama, and Kit Fisto on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In the DCAU, he’s had the privilege of voicing multiple heroes; he was John Stewart AKA Green Lantern of the Justice League shows and was the titular hero on Static Shock.

One of his more overlooked performances was in Superman: The Animated Series as Steel, a character that recently has seen more popularity due to Superman & Lois. Phil Lamarr’s range is noticeable especially since he plays a plethora of other smaller roles in all DCAU shows. In recent years, he has also become an iconic voice for Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman.
