Apple Is Working On An M3 iMac, But Don’t Expect It Anytime Soon

Apple’s M2 processors haven’t been announced yet, but a new report claims that the company is already working on an iMac powered by the M3 chip.

Apple has started working on an M3-powered iMac that’s scheduled for a launch at the end of 2023, according to a new report. Apple began ditching Intel chips for its in-house silicon in 2020. The company initially used its M1 chips for Macs and MacBooks, and more recently, unveiled the M1-powered iPad Air with a starting price of $599. Its second-generation M2 chips are expected to be unveiled soon.

The M1 chip is currently available in the following variants – the base M1, the M1 Pro, the M1 Max, and the M1 Ultra. The M1 processor powers Apple’s affordable range of products like the 24-inch iMac Pro, Mac mini, MacBooks, iPad Pro, and iPad Air. Meanwhile, the M1 Max and M1 Pro are reserved for the MacBook Pro series. Lastly, the M1 Ultra has only been used on the powerful Mac Studio, which offers workstation-level performance. Despite this careful product segmentation, there’s still room for more devices that offer increased power.

This is one reason buyers are looking forward to Apple’s M2 SoC. The newest Apple silicon is scheduled for a reveal at the upcoming WWDC 2022 virtual event, according to several reports. However, before the M2 chip breaks cover, the latest Power On newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that the development of its successor, the M3 SoC, is already underway. According to Gurman, the M3 chip could make its future debut on a 24-inch iMac computer, however, this device is unlikely to make an appearance until the end of 2023. Considering that Apple has just one iMac model currently on sale, it makes sense for the company to be working on more options for the category.

M2 Macs Are Coming Soon

For now, buyers can expect as many as nine new Macs powered by the upcoming M2 chip. According to Gurman, Apple is currently working on multiple M2-powered computers and laptops, including a MacBook Pro (entry-level), MacBook Air, and Mac mini. New 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops are also said to be in development, powered by M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. Apple could also launch a Mac Pro with a dual M2 Ultra chip.

With no M3-powered iMac launching anytime soon, the best choice for consumers would be to either wait for the M2 silicon reveal or pick a device from the M1 range, which is currently brimming with options. The current lineup of Apple silicon is quite capable and offers competitive performance. The only area where the M1 chip lacks is gaming, partly due to poor optimization and lack of developer support. Apple‘s upcoming M2 or M3 processors could fill that gap, allowing the Mac to finally emerge as a gaming machine.
