A fan poster for the upcoming film Avengers: Secret Wars recreates one of the original comic book covers featuring Spider-Man bonding with the Venom symbiote. Avengers: Secret Wars was announced as part of Marvel’s earth-shaking presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. In addition to announcing that the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will mark the end of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they announced many new titles, along with the fact that Phases 4 through 6 will be known as the Multiverse Saga. This Saga will end in 2025 with a new pair of linked Avengers films titled The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
Avengers: Secret Wars will be adapting the comic book run of the same name, which was published in 12 issues between 1984 and 1985. It is currently unknown how the film will choose to adapt the storyline of the comics, which involves a villain known as the Beyonder transporting heroes and villains to a planet called Battleworld and forcing them to fight one another. This will likely be substantially changed onscreen, considering the fact that this version of Secret Wars will most likely feature Jonathan Majors’ character Kang in lieu of the Beyonder. Kang was featured as part of the original group of villains, however, so there is precedent for the character appearing in Secret Wars.
On Instagram, fan artist spdrmnkyxxiii shares an idea for what the Avengers: Secret Wars poster might look like. It shows Tom Holland as Spider-Man front-and-center, with his suit being overtaken and turned black by the Venom symbiote. Behind him, a battle rages, featuring MCU characters like Hulk, Ant-Man (in giant mode), Shang-Chi, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel. Check out the design below:
This poster is a live-action rendering of a real comic book cover from the Secret Wars event in 1984. Specifically, it is referencing Secret Wars #8, in which Spider-Man wears the Venom suit while standing in front of a battle raging behind him. The tagline on the issue reads “Amid the chaos, there comes a costume–!,” which was also spdrmnkyxxiii’s caption on the poster.
While Spider-Man and the Venom symbiote are both currently part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is too early to tell if Holland will indeed be participating in Avengers: Secret Wars. Although there are talks of Marvel making a deal with Sony for an additional Spider-Man movie trilogy, it has not been officially confirmed what shape those might be taking. Because of the complicated negotiations over the character and his universe, it might not be possible for the film to realize that storyline, though it would certainly be fun for those pieces of the MCU to finally come together in the upcoming film.
