Deathloop Has a Subtle Tomb Raider Easter Egg

There is a subtle nod to Tomb Raider hidden within Deathloop, as well as many other clever Easter eggs that have been tucked away by Arkane Studios.

There is a subtle Tomb Raider Easter Egg hidden within Deathloop. Players are already dissecting every inch of its fictitious Blackreef setting, despite Deathloop releasing to critical acclaim on PlayStation 5 and PC only recently.

While playing Deathloop, players take on the mantle of Colt, the former head of security for the game’s mysterious AEON Program. Colt must endeavor to kill all six of the game’s main antagonists, known as Visionaries, within a 24 hour period. Failure to do so will result in Deathloop’s time loop resetting, and any of the previously deceased Visionaries (as well as their followers, the Eternalists) will once more be alive and ready to join-in with Blackreef’s everlasting and debauched party – all the while having no memory of the previous loop. Colt, on the other hand, will remember the events of each loop that he experiences. Therefore, in order to achieve the ultimate goal of killing all six of his targets, Colt must learn the secrets of Blackreef, and use them to his advantage.

As can be expected in an environment as varied and intricate as that of Deathloop‘s Blackreef, there are some clever Easter eggs that have been tucked away within the game by its developer, Arkane Studios. Several of these Easter eggs have been shared by Eurogamer on YouTube. Within this video, Eurogamer’s Ian Higton breaks down some of the more obscure and subtle Easter eggs that have been hidden around Deathloop‘s subarctic map. These include, but are certainly not limited to, a Tomb-Raider-inspired soundbite that rings out whenever Colt discovers a secret area, several vintage arcade machines with nods to Arkane and Bethesda’s previous titles, and video gaming’s famous 0451 door code.

There are other little Easter Eggs that have also been spotted by eagle-eyed fans since Deathloop’s release. Most commonly, players are finding links to Arkane’s Dishonored series. These have comprised of everything from items of furniture, to tools and weaponry.

Even with Deathloop’s very recent release, Arkane is also working on yet another title. Set to release in the summer of 2022, Redfall will launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC, and will see players battling against vampiric forces. Other than a few leaked Redfall screenshots, however, there is still very little known about Arkane’s upcoming title. It will likely, however, have a few of its own subtle Easter eggs hidden throughout, much like Deathloop’s playful homage to Lara Croft and Tomb Raider.
