The confirmation that Patrick Stewart’s Professor X is back in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hints that it will have bigger surprises.
The confirmation that Patrick Stewart is back as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness suggests that the film has bigger surprises in store for fans. Marvel Studios is following up Spider-Man: No Way Home with what appears to be another cameo-filled blockbuster via Sam Raimi’s upcoming movie. This time, however, the Benedict Cumberbatch-led project might even surpass its predecessor in terms of unexpected appearances from other Marvel characters.
Marvel Studios has officially started the marketing campaign for the movie with the first Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. The clip was dense with footage and had a lot of interesting snippets, but arguably its most exciting revelation was Charles Xavier’s shocking involvement. Fans will have to get ready, however, because if this is any indication, there will be more surprise cameos in the highly-anticipated 2022 blockbuster.
Over the years, Marvel Studios has become more secretive with both its short and long-term ventures. Given how popular the franchise has become, they could reveal very little in their promotional campaign and fans would still check it out. So for Kevin Feige and his team to decide that they will confirm Professor X’s appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could very well mean that there are bigger surprises that they’re saving for its release in May. This is very exciting considering how beloved Patrick Stewart is to the superhero fandom. In fact, ever since Disney bought Fox, he had been consistently asked if he’s willing to revisit his Marvel role in the MCU. However, he always maintained that because his Logan send-off was so well-done, he’s hesitant to reprise the role again.
So if Stewart’s Professor X isn’t even the most prominent cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, who else could it be? There are various rumors about the potential surprise appearances in the film. Based on the trailer, it seems like Marvel Studios is planning on introducing its own version of the Illuminati. Assuming that they plan on adapting the team’s original roster, the franchise could finally introduce its Reed Richards, who might eventually star in the Jon Watts’ upcoming Fantastic Four movie. At this point, John Krasinski remains the fan-favorite for the role. Similarly, the sequel could debut Namor, speculated to be the main villain of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, played by Tenoch Huerta. Both Chris Evans’ Human Torch and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool have also been suspected to be in it. Finally, there are also rumbles about Tom Cruise playing a variant of Iron Man since bringing back Robert Downey Jr. is apparently a non-starter in the studio.
Aside from these prominent hearsays, Marvel Studios has the creative ability to go all out with cameos in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to the nature of the film’s plot. Since it will see the MCU sorcerer traveling through multiple realities, they can simply feature a string of character variants—some played by their original actors, others perhaps by a different one. In any case, since most of them don’t exist in the Sacred Timeline, they will barely have any impact on the franchise’s future continuity, opening up Marvel to make some otherwise bizarre casting and creative decisions while the opportunity exists.
