Eddie Murphy signs a first-look deal with Amazon Studios, and is set to star in three new movies for Amazon following the success of Coming 2 America.
Eddie Murphy has signed a first-look deal with Amazon Studios following the success of Coming 2 America earlier this year. A sequel to the 1988 classic rom-com Coming to America, the follow-up film saw Murphy reprise his role as the optimistic Akeem. In the original film, Akeem is a young prince who leaves his royal origins in Africa and travels to New York in search of his true love. The aptly named Coming 2 America sees an older Akeem, now the monarch of his country, learn that he has a long-lost son from his time in the United States, and returns to meet his new unexpected heir.
The sequel to the 90s classic released on Amazon Prime Video in March 2021, and quickly become the number one streamed film of its debut weekend. It also topped Nielsen’s weekly streaming charts for all streamed subscription video on demand content, proving that Coming to America fans were hungry for the next installment in Akeem’s journey, more than 30 years after the character first graced the screen. The original film, which was co-written by Murphy, was just one of many huge successes during the same period for the Academy Award-nominee and Emmy Award winner. The 80s and 90s saw the actor and comedian reach the full potential of his powers, starring in hit movies such as the Beverly Hills Cop films, 1986’s The Golden Child alongside Charles Dance, Harlem Nights (1989), and Doctor Dolittle (1998), to name just a few.
Now, Amazon Studios has revealed it has closed a multi-film and first-look deal with Murphy off the back of the success of Coming 2 America. As part of the new deal, the actor will star in three films for the studio, and also develop original film projects (which he may also star in). Head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, said in a statement that Murphy is “a legend both in front of and behind the camera,” and that the studio “could not be more excited” to welcome him on board. Read Salke’s full statement below:
“Eddie is a legend both in front of and behind the camera … With undeniable comedic and dramatic genius, he consistently delivers entertaining, original stories and characters to audiences around the world. We could not be more excited to help carry on the tradition and to officially welcome Eddie into the Amazon family.”
In addition to the Coming to America sequel, more recently, Murphy has shown his diverse talents in more drama-focussed projects. These included the 2016 Mr. Church, which starred Murphy as a hired cook who forms a loving friendship with a young girl and her dying mother, and 2019’s Dolemite is My Name, in which the actor portrays legendary underground comedian, Rudy Ray Moore. Murphy earned significant critical acclaim for his Dolemite performance, as well as Best Actor nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. Between these performances and countless other iconic roles, including Dreamgirls, and voice acting work in the Shrek franchise and Disney’s Mulan, Murphy has cemented himself as a legend in the industry.
Partnering with Murphy is certainly a wise move from Amazon. A Hollywood heavy-hitter who bridges both comedy and drama, the actor has starred in more than his fair share of box office hits over the past few decades, including multiple projects that grossed up to $100 million. While it is unclear what the nature of Murphy’s upcoming projects with Amazon Studios will be, there is no doubt that loyal fans will be eager to see whatever the actor comes up with. And based on his impressive filmography, Murphy is sure to deliver.
