Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music from its catalog, but there’s a way to still listen to your favorite songs on mobile devices via Spotify.
Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music from its library following a dispute over Joe Rogan’s podcast, but that doesn’t mean that fans can’t still listen to Neil Young via Spotify on their iPhone or Android phone. Looking beyond the controversy, anyone subscribing to Spotify might still get an urge to listen to a Young classic and there is a way to do this without switching to another streaming service or audio player.
Young’s top five most popular songs, according to Spotify, are Heart Of Gold, Harvest Moon, Rockin’ in the Free World, The Needle and the Damage Done, and Down By the River, all classic hits. Young is known most for his music but was also an activist, and environmental causes have been a particular focus in the last several years. On January 24, 2022, Young challenged Spotify over the Joe Rogan Experience podcast and alleged COVID-19 misinformation, giving an ultimatum to choose between Young’s music and Rogan’s podcast. Spotify chose the latter.
While Spotify is removing all of Neil Young’s music from the platform, it’s still possible to listen to favorite songs and even entire albums via Spotify Premium on an iPhone or Android phone, as long as the songs have been purchased and the user has them in digital form. This is made possible as part of Spotify’s offline listening feature and relies on syncing custom playlists from local files on a computer to a mobile device. A quick summary of the process is to create a playlist that contains the offline music, then sync via Spotify from the computer to the phone.
How To Sync Spotify Local Songs
The first step is to open Spotify on a computer that has the Neil Young songs and albums that will be synced. Show Local Files should be enabled in the settings and more than one source folder can be added if music is in various locations. Then those songs will appear in Your library under Local Files and can be added to a playlist ready to sync to an iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
To sync with a phone, both devices should be logged in to the same Spotify account and be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. From an iPhone or iPad, the user should switch on Local Files and Enable sync from desktop in Spotify settings. From an Android device, Show local audio files should be enabled. On the computer, the mobile device should appear and can be selected to begin syncing. Although it will take some time to transfer the music, Neil Young’s classic hits and favorites will be on the user’s iPhone or Android phone and playable via Spotify once again.
