Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s Twitter account shares a touching Davis brothers photo for Throwback Thursday. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s animated superhero movie follows Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he inherits the mantle of Spider-Man from Peter Parker (Chris Pine) and attempts to save New York City from Kingpin (Liev Schreiber), who has opened portals to parallel universes to find his late wife and daughter. This introduces a variety of Spider-People into the mix, including Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). In addition to his fellow web-slingers, Miles’ journey to becoming a hero is influenced by both his father Jefferson Davis (Brian Tyree Henry), and his uncle Aaron Davis (Mahershala Ali).
Aaron begins the film as the “cool uncle” and a sympathetic ear for Miles, contrasting with his police officer father, Jefferson. Because of the paths they’ve chosen in life, the two brothers are estranged. It’s eventually revealed to Miles that Aaron is the Prowler and in league with Octavius (Kathryn Hahn), Scorpion (Joaquín Cosío), Tombstone (Krondon), and, of course, Kingpin. When Aaron ultimately spares Miles, it leads to his death at the hands of Kingpin. As opposing role models, the Davis brothers have a huge impact on who Miles chooses to be.
In celebration of Throwback Thursday, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s official Twitter account shared a poignant picture of the Davis brothers. The illustration depicts Jefferson and Aaron during simpler times—before their paths diverged. Check it out below:
Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an overwhelming success. In addition to winning Best Animated Feature at the 2019 Academy Awards, it is now hailed as one of the greatest comic book films of all time. As cinematic universes embrace the multiversal concept via films like Warner Bros./DC Films’ The Flash and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 entered production last year. The sequel will focus on the inter-dimensional relationship between Miles and Gwen Stacy.
While the late Aaron won’t be in the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel, Jefferson will, as well as what is surely a slew of Spider-People. This (presumably) includes the aforementioned pair, Peter B. Parker, Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (Issa Rae), and Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Issac)— something set up by the first film’s post-credits scene. Peter Ramsey, who directed the original, is executive producing the sequel which is slated to release on October 7, 2022.
