Is Young Morpheus In The Matrix Resurrections Trailer? Clues & Theory Explained

The Matrix Resurrections is bringing back Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), but does the trailer also feature a young Morpheus?

Is young Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections trailer, and is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II playing him? The Matrix 4 will bring back several characters from the original trilogy, including franchise leads Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, respectively. There’s also room for Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, with roles expected for the likes of The Merovingian (Lambert Wilson) and Agent Johnson (Daniel Bernhardt. There are some key absences though, most notably Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith and Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus.

Neither actor is confirmed to return (though that doesn’t mean it won’t happen, of course), but the characters could appear. In particular, there have been lots of rumours that a younger version of Morpheus will appear in The Matrix 4, and that this is who Abdul-Mateen is playing. Unsurprisingly, there’s been an air of secrecy around all of this, but with the first The Matrix Resurrections trailer released, does it reveal Young Morpheus?

It should come as no shock that The Matrix 4 trailer doesn’t confirm the presence of Morpheus, but it does strongly hint at it. Abdul-Mateen II has been speculated to be playing a young Morpheus ever since he was cast (alongside news of Fishburne not returning), and the trailer does fit with that idea. One shot shows him dressed looking a lot like Morpheus, right down to the same sunglasses, offering Neo a red pill and telling him “time to fly.” Later in the trailer, there’s a training fight sequence between Abdul-Mateen’s character and Neo, much like the Morpheus vs. Neo training scenes from 1999’s Matrix movie. The trailer does not refer to him as Morpheus by name, but he certainly appears to be by nature.

With Trinity and Neo both back, then it would make a lot of sense for Morpheus to have a presence in the movie. The Matrix 4 trailer shows that Neo doesn’t remember his past life – he’s back going by the name of Thomas Anderson, and is seemingly in therapy, experiencing dreams of the events of The Matrix trilogy and not recognizing Trinity. But, it also shows that he’s been under the control of the blue pill, something he’s looking to break free from. If anyone can do that and bring the real Neo back, it would be Morpheus. What isn’t clear is why the character would be recast. Fishburne has said he wasn’t asked to return for The Matrix 4, which suggests there’d be a key story reason for Morpheus to be played by a new actor, and specifically a younger version. It could be to do with Neo having to go back in time, or the pre-existing version of Morpheus being brought back, and thus needing to have not aged. The shot with the actor looking into the mirror, seeing it rippling back, could mean viewers are going to see his origin story.

It is still possible, though, that Abdul-Mateen II is playing a entirely new character, who is fulfilling the Morpheus-type role rather than directly replacing him. That could fit with what a lot of The Matrix 4 is doing, since Jonathan Groff’s character looks like he’s taking on an Architecht-esque part. Things certainly aren’t clear cut in the trailer: one shot shows Abdul-Mateen looking in the mirror, perhaps surprised by what he sees or unsure of who he really is, while another has him dressed looking more like an Agent, further muddying the waters. Morpheus himself could be trapped in the Matrix to begin with, needing to break free in order to then save Neo, and Abdul-Mateen might start The Matrix Resurrections as someone with no idea that he even is Morpheus. This is The Matrix after all, so just about anything can (and will) happen.
