Pokémon Fan’s Ghost-Type Sculptures Are Monstrous Fanged Nightmares

A Pokémon fan has sculpted terrifying reimaginings of Ghost-types Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar, giving them sharp fangs and distorted appearances.

A crafty Pokémon fan has reimagined classic Ghost-type Pokémon designs with terrifying, realistic changes. Creating crafts based on the hundreds of Pokémon species has become a popular way for fans of the franchise to share and express their love of certain companions. This has included crocheted versions of different Pokémon, 3D printed models and even elaborate sculptures. While keeping to the original designs can provide cute additions to room decorations, bending traditional appearances can greatly change the effect of certain Pokémon species.

One of the primary reasons the Pokémon series has stayed popular over two and a half decades due to Pokémon’s in-game designs. Most Pokémon have simple, identifiable appearances that range from spooky Ghost-types to adorable Fairy-types. This diversity offers fans of any style and preference a companion they can relate to. The simplicity of designs from the first 150 Pokémon can be particularly appealing for crafts, seeing as most species utilize simple colors and even evolutions aren’t too complex to recreate in mediums outside of drawing.

In a video shared by Blinded By Daylight during 2020 on YouTube, the artist showcases the process of sculpting the Kanto region Ghost-types Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar from clay. However, unlike their comical, cartoonish designs seen in the Pokémon games and anime, these recreations depict what each Pokémon could look like if they appeared in real life. Blinded By Light gives the Pokémon mouthfuls of long, sharp teeth as well as eyes empty of pupils. Long tongues and tattered lips turn the once hilariously spooky characters into creatures from a Pokémon-fueled nightmare.

While Blinded By Daylight hasn’t added any other realistic interpretations of Pokémon species to YouTube, the sculptures are similar to the realistic reimagines seen in the film Detective Pikachu, where the cartoonish versions of Pokémon were swapped for hyper-realistic designs instead. While fans would likely rather run into a prank-loving Gengar from Indigo League instead of a ghoulish monster, the change depicts what most would think of when encountering a ghost in a haunted building or on an abandoned road. In the same light, however, realistic versions of Pokémon like Eevee would likely appear more cat or dog-like, either adding to their appeal or potentially making them unnerving to look at compared to the cartoon designs.

For fans more interested in the softer side of Pokémon crafting, however, another fan of the series is currently working on crocheting likenesses of every Pokémon in the official national Pokédex. This total of 898 crocheted Pokémon plushies is no small undertaking, but the overall results are just as creatively inspiring as the spooky sculptures of Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar. With so many adorable, intimidating, and scary species in the Pokémon series to pick from, fans will have plenty of options for any craft project.
