Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Ride Mechanic Is Already Better Than Bikes

Pokémon Legends: Arceus allows players to mount and ride Wyrdeer, boosting on-foot exploration and improving the bike mechanic of past games.

A number of exciting changes have been announced for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, including a mechanic that allows players to ride Wyrdeer instead of needing a bike. This mount-style mode of transportation gives players the ability to travel the Hisui region with a Pokémon companion and removes the frustrating mechanics of bicycles in past Pokémon games. It may also offer players the ability to access areas unreachable on foot while exploring Hisui’s vast maps.

Getting around regions in any Pokémon game can be a real challenge, especially early on. Routes can be long and tedious, and the need to revisit past towns a distance from a current location can require lengthy backtracking. Thankfully, there have been mechanics in place to aid trainers since the first Pokémon games like the HM Fly and the Bicycle. Both options allow players to quickly move from place to place, but not necessarily in a way that is remarkable or improves region exploration.

In some Pokémon games, bikes have multiple modes, or bikes have to be traded out to access different abilities. For example, the Acro and Mach bicycles in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire both were needed to reach certain areas on routes, but both couldn’t be held at the same time. The Acro bike allowed players to do tricks like bouncing from path to path, while the Mach bike was much faster and sped up travel between towns. While few details have officially been announced regarding the ride mechanics in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it has been revealed that Wyrdeer can move quickly, and does appear capable of acrobatic jumps.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Wyrdeer Could Jump Rivers Or Ditches

It is possible Pokémon Legends: Arceus players will be able to level a bond with their Wyrdeer that increases the number of skills it has as a mount. This could include the ability to jump small rivers or do acrobatic leaps across ditches and ravines. This type of mechanic would allow secret areas to be scattered through maps, encouraging players to continue returning and exploring areas even after the easily accessible locations have been combed through. It is also possible Wyrdeer could have an item sensing ability, allowing it to help its trainer locate berries or forage items for crafting.

While these skills would be useful for players exploring the Hisui region, nothing has currently been confirmed by Nintendo. However, it is possible more information will become available in the coming weeks, as the Pokémon Legends: Arceus is confirmed for release on January 28, 2022. Further release trailers could also include more information on other transportation Pokémon like Basculegion and Hisuian Braviary. These big changes could help Pokémon Legends: Arceus pioneer a new future for the game series.
