Instagram artist Samuel Cheve reimagines EW’s Dune cover photo as a Spider-Man: No Way Home crossover with Timothée Chalamet as Peter Parker.
A fan artist has edited a promotional image imagining Dune star Timothée Chalamet as Spider-Man opposite Zendaya’s MJ from Spider-Man: No Way Home. Dune, which opened this weekend, follows Paul Atreides as his government official father is assigned to the desert planet Arakis in a move meant to undermine him. While conflict broils on the planet’s surface, Paul must conquer his fear and save the future of his family. The film, which stars Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, and Josh Brolin in addition to Chalamet and Zendaya, beat its Warner Bros. peer, The Suicide Squad, on its opening night box office by a cool $1 million.
Zendaya, who plays Chani in Dune, is having quite the season. In addition to appearing in the sci-fi epic, she will be reprising her role as MJ in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third film in the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy. The Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which will be the fourth in Phase 4 and the 27th overall, is set to swing into theaters on December 17, 2021. In addition to Zendaya and Holland, the film – which director Jon Watts has described as the Avengers: Endgame of Spider-Man films – will also feature villains from previous Spider-Man continuities including Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro.
On Instagram, Parisian artist and graphic designer Samuel Cheve posted a piece of crossover artwork that spices up Entertainment Weekly‘s Dune cover photo featuring Zendaya and Chalamet. The artist specializes in these kinds of mashups, with previous pieces including Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man as Venom and Mulan as a contestant on Squid Game. This time, he harnessed Zendaya’s incredible fall season to imagine what it might look like if Chalamet stepped into Holland’s shoes as the Peter Parker to her MJ. Check out the post below:
The artist also shared a peek at the original images so viewers can see the progress of translating the actors into their Spider-Man selves. By adding a cityscape background and putting Chalamet in the classic Spidey lycra, Cheve completely altered the original “fashion shoot at sunset” vibe. People scrolling through their Instagram feeds would be forgiven for thinking this was an actual image from a Marvel movie at first.
Samuel Cheve just might be on to something. The Spider-Man films and their intellectual property have been subject to a long corporate tug-of-war, to the point that the cast and crew of Spider-Man: Far From Home wasn’t informed about the contractual impasse between Sony and Marvel at the time. If Holland eventually exits the role or a competing Spider-Man film gets greenlit after Spider-Man: No Way Home, studios may just want to tap the Dune star to step into the Spidey suit.
