Andor lead star, Diego Luna, teases some unexpected cameos from familiar faces in the upcoming Star Wars live-action TV series for Disney+.
The upcoming Andor TV series will feature some familiar Star Wars faces, lead star Diego Luna teases. Following the success of The Mandalorian, Disney and Lucasfilm became motivated in creating more live-action shows on the small screen. It was perfect timing as the House of Mouse also launched its own streaming platform, Disney+, which houses all of these new projects.
Andor functions as a prequel for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was where the Freedom Fighter was first introduced and ultimately died. However, the upcoming show won’t be featuring K-2S0 (Alan Tudyk) yet, contrary to initial reports. Its events take place five years before the Gareth Edwards-directed blockbuster that was released in 2016. Filming for the series has now finished, and the project is currently in post-production. No official release date has been announced, but the 12-episode narrative is slated to roll out sometime in 2022.
While Luna obviously can’t talk about the plot specifics of Andor, which he also co-produces, he told Deadline in a recent interview while promoting his new Amazon Prime Video project, Pan Y Circo, that production has officially wrapped. He also teased that some familiar faces would be making unexpected appearances in the show, although he didn’t give any clue who they might be. Evading spoiler questions, the actor instead suggested that they talk about Rogue One instead, since he can freely discuss it. Read Luna’s quote below:
“You’ll definitely see familiar faces. I can tell you about this project like no other because I can’t spoil the ending if you’ve seen [Stars Wars: Rogue One] already. No matter what I say, I can’t ruin the ending.”
For context, Genevieve O’Reilly has already been confirmed to reprise her role as Mon Mothma, and that makes sense considering the fact that she played a major role in the birth of the Rebellion several years later. Meanwhile, Forest Whitaker is reportedly coming back as Saw Gerrera. Both actors appeared with Luna in Rogue One, and it’s curious if they’re the ones he’s teasing in his latest interview. If there’s more to them, it’s worth noting that there were rumors that Obi-Wan Kenobi will have a recurring role in Andor. Given the timeline, this is possible; it might even tie to the events of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. Additionally, since Lucasfilm already has Ewan McGregor returning for the fan-favorite role, they may have made the best out of it by also incorporating him in another show. Perhaps they might be even able to incorporate Darth Vader.
As exciting as these cameos are, they should also be used carefully. Fans were initially thrilled with the many Star Wars guests in The Mandalorian season 2, but critics pointed out that they somehow took the attention away from Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu. This was most prominent in the finale when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) appeared. The main discussion thereafter was about his return and not the major implications of Mando and Baby Yoda separating. Hopefully, Andor is aware of these potential problems with surprise guests.
