The End Of The F***ing World is a dark romance based on a Charles Forsman graphic novel, but will it return for a third season?
Will The End Of The F***ing World season 3 happen, or has the dark romantic drama come to an end? The End Of The F***ing World — AKA TEOTFW — started as a graphic novel by Charles Forsman. TEOTFW’s graphic novel followed the twisted road trip love story between teenagers Alyssa and James, with the latter being a burgeoning sociopath. The comic ends on a tragic note, and in 2014 a TEOTFW pilot short film was created by director Jonathan Entwistle, which starred Red Oaks’ Craig Roberts as James and Jessica Barden as Alyssa.
The eventual End Of The F****ing World TV series arrived in 2017, with Barden returning as Alyssa, though Roberts was replaced by Alex Lawther. TEOTFW received praise for its performances and writing and was considered one of the year’s best dramas, but while it maintained the edge of Forsman’s source material, it was helped by an injection of black humor. The first season was reasonably faithful to the graphic novel though it ended on a more ambiguous note. This led to a second season which picked up with James and Alyssa following the aftermath of season 1 and left the door open for The End Of The F***ing World season 3 to happen.
The End Of The F***ing World season 2’s ending saw Alyssa and James’ relationship progress to the next level. After scattering James’ father’s ashes, they both end up confessing their true feelings for the other. It was a surprisingly hopeful note for the central couple’s story to end on, which brought about more questions about if The End Of The F***ing World season 3 is happening. Here’s everything that is known about the current status of the show’s future.
Jonathan Entwistle Didn’t Want The End Of The F***ing World Season 2
Jonathan Entwistle followed up the first season of The End Of The F***ing World with another Charles Forsman adaptation I Am Not Okay With This. This starred Sophia Lillis as a teenager who develops telekinetic abilities, but despite ending on a cliffhanger setting up another season, the show was canceled by Netflix. This was something of a blow to Entwistle, but in a follow-up interview about the show’s abrupt cancellation with Insider, he revealed he fought not to bring The End Of The F***ing World back for a second season. He felt the story made for a great one-season oddity, but he was overruled.
Charlie Covell Has Ruled Out The End Of The F***ing World Season 3
Charlie Covell adapted The End Of The F***ing World and wrote all sixteen episodes of the show. While promoting the second season in 2019, she revealed she’s finished with the story, telling Radio Times “I think to try and eke more out would be wrong, I like where we’ve left it.” Season 2’s finale does end the unlikely love story on a surprisingly sweet note, so it’s understandable Covell doesn’t want to put James and Alyssa through more heartache.
The End Of The F***ing World Season 3 Is Unlikely
The End Of The F***ing World season 3 is highly doubtful now. The key creatives have moved on from the Netflix Original show, with Entwistle developing new Power Rangers movies and TV shows. Since the second season continued well past Charles Forsman’s graphic novel, there’s also no roadmap for where a third season could even go. Like Charlie Covell has suggested, it might be best to end while viewers are wanting a little more.
Was The End of the F***ing World Cancelled
Netflix hasn’t officially canceled The End Of The F***ing World season 3 like the streamer did with Entwistle’s I Am Not Okay With This series. Although that technically means the show could live on in some fashion, all indications point to that not happening. Audiences might want to see what happens to James and Alyssa next, but their story should be viewed as completed.
