Flaco, the famed Eurasian eagle owl that gained local celebrity status after escaping the Central Park Zoo, has met a tragic end, as reported by the New York Times. The nocturnal bird, who made Manhattan his new home, passed away on the night of February 23 after colliding with a building on the Upper West Side.

The Wildlife Conservation Society issued an official statement, revealing that Flaco was discovered on the ground, prompting the building residents to contact the Wild Bird Fund, which confirmed the owl’s demise. The necropsy report unveiled that the 4.1-pound bird had suffered significant hemorrhage under the sternum and in the body cavity around the liver.
