Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston, as relayed by Hayden Bird of Boston.com, revealed on Monday that Kraft had reached a resolution following the Patriots’ Week 10 defeat to the Colts in Frankfurt.

“After their time in Germany, discussions I had that week made it abundantly clear that a decision had been made. They were committed to finishing out the season, and at its conclusion, a separation would occur for various reasons,” Curran stated.
Curran further indicated that this parting of ways might involve a de facto trade of Belichick to a new team, offering an explanation for the decision not to terminate Belichick during the ongoing season.
Despite a victory against the Steelers last Thursday night, Curran expressed skepticism, saying, “Just because they won last week in Pittsburgh in primetime, I don’t think it quells anything.”
While a single win may not be transformative, the possibility of more victories could theoretically impact the situation. Any decision remains subject to alteration before implementation. A successful stretch of final games, including matchups against the Chiefs, Broncos, Bills, and Jets, might prompt a reconsideration. Even a 3-1 record towards the end of the season could influence Kraft’s stance, especially considering his recent unprompted acknowledgment of the importance of longstanding relationships during an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay.
The pivotal moment appears to be the loss in Germany, a game that Kraft deemed significant, stating, “This is our thirtieth year that I’ve had the privilege of owning this team, and I’ve never been 2-7.”
With the Patriots currently holding a 3-10 record, a five-game winning streak to close the season could alter the perception of failure. Another factor to consider is Belichick’s desires—whether he wishes to continue or seeks a fresh start.
Ultimately, no decision is set in stone until it’s officially confirmed. Regardless of the outcome, there remains a possibility for adjustments once the dust settles on the 2023 season. However, the prevailing sentiment suggests that retaining Belichick might require substantial changes, especially if he himself is contemplating a change after nearly 25 years in the same position.
