BMW
Since the introduction of the original X5 in 1999, BMW has sold over 12 million X-badged SUVs, underscoring the immense popularity of midsize SUVs globally. Anticipated to commence production at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary in 2025, the Neue Klasse X is poised to continue the brand’s SUV legacy, preceding the Neue Klasse sedan.
The production model of the Neue Klasse X is expected to closely resemble its concept counterpart, as affirmed by Kai Langer, head of BMW i Design. While certain design elements may be adjusted to meet regulatory standards, the overall aesthetic, volume, and form are indicative of what consumers can expect on the road.
Unlike recent BMW models characterized by excessive surface detailing, the Vision Neue Klasse X exudes a cleaner and more confident design ethos. Muscular fenders seamlessly integrated with a concave bodyside and a low beltline contribute to an airy and spacious greenhouse, promising excellent visibility.
Notably, the concept’s reinterpretation of the classic double kidney grille pays homage to BMW’s heritage while maintaining a contemporary flair. The rear light graphic, featuring large red lozenges set within sculpted bodywork, highlights the vehicle’s cohesive design language.
While certain features showcased in the concept, such as the sofa-like back seat, may not transition to production, BMW intends to offer expressive interior options, including sustainably sourced materials. The interior architecture, characterized by an arching center console and a minimalist dash dominated by a large central touch screen, offers a glimpse into BMW’s future design direction.
The introduction of BMW’s “New iDrive” marks a significant departure in user interface design, promising enhanced customization and intuitive functionality. Through digital customization options and advanced hardware integration, BMW aims to redefine the driving experience, catering to a diverse global audience.
Underpinning the Neue Klasse X’s performance is a cutting-edge software stack and powerful ECUs designed to optimize powertrain efficiency and facilitate autonomous driving capabilities. With an 800V electrical architecture and increased battery power density, BMW anticipates significant improvements in charge times and driving range.
In the words of Jochen Goller, BMW’s commitment to the Neue Klasse program represents a transformative journey, embodying the brand’s essence while embracing the demands of the future automotive landscape.
