Among the numerous photographs capturing Diana, Princess of Wales, one particular image has achieved iconic status, encapsulating the profound solitude she endured throughout her lifetime. This photograph portrays Diana in a candid, solitary moment, seated at the edge of a diving board.

This image played a pivotal role in defining the essence of the People’s Princess—depicting a glamorous outsider, the embodiment of isolation, a public figure grappling to shield her personal life. It is unsurprising that when Netflix unveiled Season 6 of The Crown, debuting on Nov. 16, they chose to announce it by recreating this renowned image of the princess, featuring actor Elizabeth Debicki. In this reimagining, Debicki’s back is turned to the camera, chin tucked protectively into her shoulder in Diana’s distinctive manner, exposing her loneliness even as much of her remains obscured.

The Crown is not the first to pay tribute to this photo. From the promotional poster for the 2013 film “Diana,” starring Naomi Watts, to the Off-White Spring/Summer 2018 fashion show inspired by Princess Diana, the diving board photo has been replicated, reappropriated, and referenced extensively. It looms large in the collective imagination, a tangible representation of the melancholy that permeated Diana’s life. Most recently, the musical artist SZA recreated the photo for the album artwork of her album, “SOS,” expressing her attraction to the “isolated” aura the princess exuded.

The photograph is striking not just for its composition but also for its poignant context. Diana, adorned in a turquoise one-piece bathing suit, delicately balances on the diving board of Mohamed al-Fayed’s private yacht, surrounded seemingly by nothing but the vast sea. Taken by a paparazzo six days before her tragic death, amid a media frenzy sparked by tabloid images of her kissing al-Fayed’s son, Dodi, the photo now reads as ominous foreshadowing.

While numerous photos depict the loneliness Diana often felt in royal life, such as her awkward engagement photo with the distant Charles or the infamous solo visit to the Taj Mahal, the image of Diana sitting alone on the diving board stands out as one of the most iconic. It underscores the bittersweet isolation of Diana’s life—a woman who could never be truly alone but was intimately acquainted with loneliness.
