Meet the iconic couple from the woodstock album co – tymoff In an impromptu decision, a young couple ventured to the legendary Woodstock festival, a move that led to a transformative moment in their lives, immortalized in an unforgettable photograph.

“We had no idea our picture was taken,” Nick Ercoline recounted. “Yet, that pose you see in the photo is something Bobbi and I do every morning and every night before bed.”

The iconic photograph, captured by Burk Uzzle, later graced the cover of the Woodstock record album. Bobbi gifted her grandson an autographed copy of the album featuring their image for Christmas.

At the time, Nick was a college student, and Bobbi worked at a bank. The original $18.00 concert tickets strained their budget, initially deterring them from attending the Woodstock Music Festival. However, on August 15, 1969, as Nick and Bobbi listened to the local radio station W.A.L.L. on Bobbi’s porch, the buzz and excitement of the event beckoned them.

Reporters and radio announcers were urging people not to come due to overcrowding, but Bobbi and Nick defied the warnings. “We were twenty… we had to go,” declared Bobbi.

The following morning, they enlisted some friends and gathered essential items before embarking in their friend Jim ‘Corky’ Corcoran’s mother’s car. However, their journey was halted by a state police car blocking the road, with a young man sitting on the hood, clad in blue jeans, no shirt, and moccasins, casually smoking a joint.

Perplexed, Nick and Bobbi and their friends soon found themselves in a sea of halted vehicles. Abandoning their car, they joined others on foot, following a clear path to the festival grounds. “We truly had no idea what to expect. Our plan was to check it out and return home for me to attend mass the next day,” said Bobbi.

On their way, they encountered Herbie, a young man experiencing a bad trip who had lost his friends. They embraced Herbie and ventured further into the festival, with Herbie’s staff adorned with a ribbon and a butterfly becoming an iconic element in the later photograph.

Amidst the vibrant orange lights, swaying to the music, and wrapped in a found blanket, Bobbi, Nick, Corky, Herbie, and their companions staked out a spot in the midst of the festival crowd.

Sometime on Sunday morning, the festival’s last day, Nick and Bobbi stood together, greeting the sunrise while wrapped in a quilt. Unbeknownst to them, Burk Uzzle captured this moment, ultimately selecting the photo for the Woodstock record album cover. Bobbi humorously noted, “The picture was taken when I was supposed to be at mass—proof that I didn’t attend!”

In addition to Nick and Bobbi, the photograph featured Herbie’s butterfly staff and their dear friend Corky, who had recently returned from a 13-month tour in Vietnam with the Marines. Corky, pictured behind the couple, lay beneath Herbie’s army blanket.

Tragically, James ‘Corky’ Corcoran passed away in September earlier this year. Bobbi commemorated him by sharing the photo, featuring the iconic Woodstock image, on Facebook.

“When I see that picture with Corky lying beside us, it’s almost like an oxymoron,” mused Bobbi. “Here we are, the couple that has come to symbolize the festival, and here’s our marine, our Vietnam veteran, lying next to us. It’s just peace, love, and our marine.”

For over 50 years, Bobbi and Nick have cherished this experience. They married in August 1971, had two children, and pursued careers—Nick as a union carpenter and Bobbi as a school nurse.

“The further I get from the event, the more I realize what a phenomenal thing it was. All those people under less than perfect circumstances, and it was filled with peace and love, no violence,” remarked Bobbi. “This world needs more Woodstock.”

Together ever since, Bobbi and Nick Ercoline anticipate celebrating their 50th anniversary and eagerly look forward to many more adventures together.
