BMW CE 02: Navigating Urban Terrain with the eParkourer”

BMW‘s unconventional CE 02, as described by BMW Motorrad product manager Sarah Hahn, defies traditional classification as either a motorcycle or scooter. Instead, she coins it an eParkourer, drawing parallels to the sport of parkour, known for its dynamic urban movement. While the CE 02 doesn’t scale walls or traverse buildings, a test ride in Cascais, near Lisbon, reveals it to be a playful and agile means of navigating city streets.

Offered in two versions, the base model, not available in the U.S., restricts its e-motor to 5 horsepower, permitting 15-year-olds and car drivers without a motorcycle license to ride it in select European countries. With a top speed of 28 mph and a single battery providing around 28 miles of range, it caters to urban commuting.

The more robust model boasts 15 hp, reaching a top speed of 60 mph, accompanied by a peak torque of 41 lb-ft. Equipped with two batteries, it extends the range to approximately 56 miles. The CE 02 prioritizes maneuverability in city traffic over raw speed or aggressive cornering.

Constructed with a double loop tubular steel frame, telescopic front forks, and a rear swingarm controlled by a shock absorber, the CE 02 features a low-mounted e-motor driving the rear wheel via a toothed belt. Sporting 14-inch cast alloy wheels and robust tires, along with disc brakes, it includes safety features like BMW Motorrad’s anti-lock braking system, traction control, and stability control.

The 1.96 kWh air-cooled lithium-ion batteries reside beneath the removable seat, with a standard 0.9 kW charger capable of an 80 percent charge in under three hours. An optional 1.5 kW charger shortens this time.

The 15 hp model, in the tested Highline package, exhibits a distinctive color scheme, gold anodized front forks, heated hand grips, and a smartphone holder. BMW’s Connected Ride Control via the app offers real-time information on charge time and additional content, accessible through handlebar controls.

With a low saddle height of 29.5 inches and a weight of 291 pounds, the CE 02 is designed for easy handling, particularly for novice riders. A unique low-speed reverse gear aids in parking maneuvers, activated by a button on the handlebars.

Acceleration is smooth and immediate, thanks to the e-motor’s torque, making the CE 02 adept at keeping pace with urban traffic. Despite a slight noise from the motor and drive belt, and a desire for a more responsive Flash mode, the overall riding experience is satisfying.

Priced at $8,194 ($9,069 with the Highline package), the CE 02 joins BMW’s U.S. urban two-wheeler lineup, offering an expressive alternative to conventional scooters and motorcycles.
