4 Lessons We Can Learn from The Wizard of Oz

An adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s book, this 1939 film, is a precious classic from the archives of Old Hollywood. It has influenced popular culture in more ways than one – from films like ‘A New Hope’ to casino games like the ‘Wizard of Oz – Emerald City’ slot on platincasino.co.uk. It is fascinating how the literary world and the world of cinema can have such a broad influence not only on the society of their time but on future generations as well.

In the end good always prevails!

The triumph of good over evil is the most striking theme in The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy comes across many good spirits on her way, we have Glenda, the good witch, who introduces her to the Munchkins, who are kind and friendly to her. This does not mean that evil is not looking and doesn’t come to haunt Dorothy, however when The Wicked Witch of the West chases after her and her ruby slippers, Dorothy and her ‘good’ friends defeat the witch and save the people of Oz.

The power to succeed in life lies within us.

Many a time we end up underestimating ourselves, thinking that we lack what we need to be successful and happy in life. Again, this movie has a lot to say about self-esteem. Whatever the Tin man, the Scarecrow, and the cowardly Lion thought they lacked, they possessed, right from the start. Also, just as Dorothy discovered that clicking her heels together three times and chanting, “there’s no place like home” took her back home, we, too, can be self-reliant. We do not need the great and powerful Oz to succeed!

Never stop dreaming

It was only a dream that took Dorothy to what was the best adventure of her life. She met new people who thereafter became genuine friends. Moreover, during her journey, she learned a lifetime of lessons about survival, good and evil, as well as love and hate. Hence, as she sang, “The dreams that you dare to dream, really do come true”, we, too, should dare to dream big, it is our only way of climbing over the rainbow.

Everyone has their own path

While Dorothy’s yellow brick road led her to the Emerald City of Oz, each one of us has a yellow brick road to follow that will lead us to our own destination and to fulfill our own destiny. Also, just as Dorothy faced many troubles and challenges on her way, particularly with the Wicked Witch and her vicious flying monkeys, we too shall, while walking our yellow brick road have our own worries and challenges to face and address. However, the moral of the story is, that we should always stick to our destination and keep following our path that will ultimately lead to reaching our pre-destined goals.

Conclusion

The Wizard of Oz is a timeless classic that is popular among people of all age groups and backgrounds. Lessons and morals transcend all social stereotypes, thus a story that brings to light such morals cannot but be considered to be, a great classic. The article above deals with but a few, of the lessons we can draw from the storyline. There are many more lessons that can be learned, and it is all of this which makes for an amazing historical movie classic.
