Chinese Scientists Conducting Experiments with Lethal Virus Elicit Concerns from Experts: Urgent Calls to Halt ‘Madness'”
Chinese scientists are conducting experiments involving a highly lethal virus, GX_P2V, which has exhibited a 100% fatality rate in mice. The virus, detailed in a study on bioRxiv, specifically targeted the brains of mice genetically engineered to mimic human composition.

The infected mice displayed rapid weight loss, lethargy, and white eyes within five days, succumbing to the virus eight days after infection.
The scientists expressed astonishment at the swift mortality observed in the mice and highlighted the potential spillover risk into humans. The virus, discovered in 2017 in pangolins and resembling Sars-CoV-2, infected various organs, including the lungs, bones, eyes, tracheas, and brains, with the severe brain infection being the primary cause of death.
Conducted by the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, this groundbreaking study is the first to report a 100% mortality rate in mice infected by a coronavirus-related virus. However, the study leaves uncertainties about the potential impact on humans.
Upon its online publication, experts raised concerns about the research’s validity. Francois Balloux, an epidemiology expert at the University College London’s Genetics Institute, criticized the study as “terrible” and “scientifically totally pointless,” questioning the value of infecting specially engineered mice with a random virus. Dr. Gennadi Glinsky, a retired professor of medicine at Stanford, called for an end to the “madness.”
Notably, the 2024 study appears unrelated to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which was previously linked to lab leak theories during the pandemic.
