Mimi Silver Liebenberg sustained severe and permanent brain damage in the collision at the intersection of Pacific St. and Buffalo Ave. in Crown Heights on Aug. 14, 2022. The driver, identified as Clossie Spencer, had been searching for a parking spot when he struck the victim, who was crossing Pacific St. in the crosswalk.

Surveillance footage retrieved from the nearby Kingsborough Houses depicts Spencer exiting the vehicle, observing the critically injured woman, and then departing the scene without rendering assistance.

Liebenberg’s sister vividly remembers her mother’s anguish upon witnessing the footage, recounting how her sister had diligently checked both ways before crossing the street, demonstrating caution and care.

Despite intensive medical intervention, Liebenberg’s condition deteriorated, rendering her unable to communicate, walk unaided, or regain her independence. Tragically, she passed away in December at the age of 38, following multiple brain surgeries.

In light of Liebenberg’s death, Spencer was re-apprehended and now faces charges including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, and failure to exercise due care.

However, for Liebenberg’s family, these legal proceedings cannot erase the profound loss they have endured. The victim’s sister expresses skepticism about whether Spencer’s punishment will truly enhance community safety, emphasizing the moral gravity of leaving the scene after causing such devastation.

Liebenberg, who had been pursuing her passion as an architect, hailed from a small town in North Carolina. Her tragic demise serves as a stark reminder of the irreparable consequences of reckless actions behind the wheel.
