In the two days preceding the incident, OpenAI faced intermittent outages of unclear origin. Initially ascribed to technical difficulties, further investigation revealed a more disconcerting cause: cyberattacks.

In response to user complaints about ChatGPT’s downtime, OpenAI issued an incident report on November 8, signaling an ongoing investigation. Within 40 minutes, an update indicated that a fix had been implemented, with OpenAI actively monitoring the situation. Subsequent updates, however, disclosed that “periodic outages” persisted.
Initial reports from OpenAI linked the substantial outages to a suspected DDoS attack affecting both ChatGPT and the application programming interface. Notably, the hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, alleging bias and collaboration with Israel on the part of ChatGPT.
Anonymous Sudan has a history of launching cyberattacks against prominent organizations, including Microsoft, Xbox, NATO, the European Investment Bank, and various Israeli civilian and military institutions. The group purports to operate from Africa in support of oppressed Muslims worldwide, although some cybersecurity experts suspect ties to the Russian government.
Anonymous Sudan is likely a subset of the pro-Russian Killnet threat group, primarily motivated by financial interests and targeting entities opposed by Russia. It is essential to highlight that the primary Anonymous operations groups disavow any association with Anonymous Sudan.
On November 8, service disruptions also affected ChatGPT competitor Claude 2, with an error message indicating, “Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond to your message.”
