While navigating the Elven Quarter, you’ll encounter an obstacle of Compacted Dirt impeding your progress. The solution lies in fashioning a robust Steel Pickaxe to carve a path into the primary Mines of Moria region.
The hitch, however, is the absence of a blueprint for the Steel Pickaxe, not to mention the scarcity of Steel Ingots. To procure them, you must reactivate an ancient Dwarven forge. Here’s a guide on how to restore this forge, enabling you to forge a Steel Pickaxe and resume your journey in Return to Moria.
Steel Pickaxe
To obtain a Steel Pickaxe, your first task is to repair the Great Forge of Narvi in the Elven Quarter area. You can find it at the heart of the mini-region after maneuvering past or confronting the Goblin Man camps. The forge lacks three crucial components, identifiable by the radiant spaces indicating their intended positions. I stumbled upon both the Gear and Crank parts within the forge room, promptly inserting them where needed.
However, the third component posed a greater challenge. Upon examining the glowing space, blueprints became available for crafting replacements. In my case, the absent part was a Replacement Pipe. If you can’t locate a part nearby, return to camp or the nearest accessible forge, and utilize Iron Ingots to craft it. After obtaining the part, return to the forge and install it. If you encounter difficulty in positioning the part correctly, remember you can swiftly construct wooden platforms by pressing V or hurl objects with R.
Before placing the final piece, ensure you are equipped with a shield and a weapon, as repairing the forge will trigger an onslaught of adversaries. Keep mobile and utilize your shield to endure the assault, or alternatively, flee back to camp to evade the confrontation. Now, you’re prepared to forge steel.
With the Great Forge of Narvi restored, you can craft a Steel Pickaxe and, more importantly, unlock the formula for smelting Steel Ingots at a furnace. To forge the Steel Pickaxe, gather the following materials:
Three Steel Ingots: Each necessitates three Iron Ore and three Coal.
Four Elven Wood: Acquire these by felling trees in the Elven Quarter.
One Hide: Hunt a bear or the deer-like creatures in the Elven Quarter.
With all the essential materials at your disposal, forge your Steel at a forge and utilize it to breach the Compacted Dirt barrier, granting access to the Mines of Moria area.
