Rory Mcllroy’s new cautious approach will ensure major drought ends
2014 was a landmark year for Rory Mcllroy as he was able to claim back-to-back majors after winning the Open and then the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club only three weeks later. Unsurprisingly at the time, all the talk was centered on how likely it was that Mcllroy would go on to better Jack Nicklaus’ major win record with almost the entire golf industry in agreement that the Northern Irishman would. Fast forward to 2022 and Mcllroy hasn’t won a major since.
That could of course change at the Masters with Mcllroy priced at +1400 in the latest golf odds for the upcoming major in April, but the truth is that most people won’t be holding their breath. Indeed, the golf betting tips this week are naturally wary of putting too much value in Mcllroy’s stock at the Masters given that it is the only major he has yet to win.
Additionally, the 32-year-old has experienced one of the greatest meltdowns during a final round at Augusta National in recent times after imploding in 2011 whilst he was in the lead. Basically, the Masters hasn’t always been kind to Mcllroy, which coupled with his current drought is the reason most punters aren’t backing him in early spring in Georgia.
However, even if the four-time major champion is predicted to struggle at the Masters, he is tipped to end his major drought in 2022 after revealing that he has stopped putting length first and will adopt a more cautious approach. In essence, this means that the swing tweaks that Mcllroy has been implementing over the last year in order to keep up with the tour’s biggest hitters like Bryson DeChambeau will be totally disregarded now.
The 32-year-old’s new focus will be hitting fairways off the tee which will see a return to using his three-wood from the box. For Mcllroy fans around the world that will be music to their ears as there is no finer sight in golf than the Northern Irishman letting rip with his trusted three-wood. Mcllroy is extremely precise with the club which will ensure that he is in the advantageous position to attack flags and make the birdies he needs to top the leaderboard.
Of course, Mcllroy will be sacrificing distance in an effort to enjoy a better second shot which may be a concern for some, but the overwhelming evidence is that long drives don’t always equate to better scores. In Mcllroy’s case, the opposite has been happening as his distances increase but his accuracy pays the price which has seen him struggle to find his form of eight years ago.

However, now that the 32-year-old has decided to revert back to his old strategy which includes exercising a bit more caution, there’s every chance that we will see his name at the summit of the leaderboard at the end of a major in 2022. Strap in for the return of the Mack.
