Trump Calls Texas Democrat James Talarico ‘Unelectable’ Over Vegan Diet

The Texas Senate race has taken a highly personal turn as former President Donald Trump launched a scathing critique against Democratic nominee James Talarico. Speaking with reporters before boarding Air Force One on Wednesday morning, Trump didn’t just project a massive victory for his chosen Republican candidate—he took direct aim at Talarico’s lifestyle, personal faith and environmental platform, declaring that a plant-based diet makes him fundamentally incompatible with Texas voters.

At the heart of the attack is a newly resurfaced video where Talarico, a prominent state lawmaker who recently clinched the Democratic nomination, announced that his campaign would run strictly on vegan products to highlight animal welfare and combat climate change. In a state where the beef industry is part of the cultural fabric, Trump seized on the moment to draw a sharp political line.

Trump Predicts Landslide Republican Win in Lone Star State

The former president made his remarks while celebrating his recent endorsement of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Trump predicted that Paxton would secure a “very substantial” victory in his upcoming primary runoff against incumbent Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, before easily carrying that momentum into the general election.

When shifting his focus to the Democratic opposition, Trump used highly charged language, calling Talarico a “very defective candidate” whose values simply do not align with the average Texan.

“You can’t get elected as a vegan in Texas,” Trump stated flatly, pointing to the candidate’s diet as the ultimate political dealbreaker in the Lone Star State.

Personal Beliefs and Pandemic Habits Under Fire

Trump’s criticism extended far beyond agriculture. He combed through Talarico’s past progressive statements on social issues and identity, pointing to the lawmaker’s previous comments that “sex is a spectrum” and “God is non-binary.” Trump told reporters that Talarico “believes in six genders” and “takes hits at Jesus Christ.”

Turning to the pandemic, Trump also mocked Talarico for his cautious health choices, highlighting that the candidate was seen wearing a face mask in public just six months ago. “Anybody wearing a mask six months ago doesn’t get it,” Trump added, using the visual to paint Talarico as out of touch.

The Resurfaced 2022 Speech Sparking the Controversy

The political uproar traces back to an unearthed video clip from a 2022 campaign event. In the footage, Talarico delivers an earnest speech addressing the environmental and ethical impact of global food systems, framing a reduction in meat consumption as a deeply moral obligation.

“We have heard, I think, heard more and more issues of animal welfare,” Talarico said in the clip. “I think, not just because it’s the right thing to do and it’s the moral thing to do but also… necessary to fight climate change.” He went on to describe shifting away from meat as an “existential” necessity for the planet’s future.

Inside Talarico’s Plant-Based Campaign Promise

To practice what he was preaching, Talarico shared a unique organizational decision with his supporters during the speech. He announced that his team was officially running a “non-meat campaign,” choosing to buy food and promotional supplies exclusively from local vegan businesses.

Because Talarico was wearing a face mask while delivering these remarks, the video provided a perfect storm of visual and rhetorical ammunition for his political opponents.

Texas GOP Rallies Around the State’s Multi-Billion-Dollar Beef Industry

It took very little time for the Texas Republican establishment to weaponize the clip. Beef cattle production is not just a stereotype in Texas; it is a multi-billion-dollar powerhouse and the single largest segment of the state’s agricultural economy. For conservatives, framing Talarico’s personal diet as an attack on Texas workers proved to be an effective rallying cry.

Republican leaders quickly flooded social media, turning the policy discussion into a defensive campaign for Texas culture and commerce.

Republican Leaders Double Down on Critiques

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) mocked Talarico’s platform on X (formerly Twitter), asking tongue-in-cheek, “Who wants to tell him that cattle is the #1 commodity in Texas?”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz took a more aggressive stance online, labeling Talarico a “freak” and telling followers that the Democrat essentially wants to “ban BBQ.” Senator John Cornyn kept his response brief but memorable, posting, “Vote Republican this November. The steaks couldn’t be higher.”

Talarico Relies on Texas Imagery for Damage Control

Recognizing the danger of being isolated from mainstream Texas culture, Talarico’s campaign immediately pivoted into damage control to soften his image.

In a bid to show he isn’t hostile to Texas traditions, the campaign distributed a photograph of Talarico dressed in a Texas flag shirt, smiles all around, taking a large bite out of a turkey leg. The visual was a clear attempt to inject some lighthearted humanity back into a race that has quickly become a fierce battlefield of cultural identities.
